In a world
of computerised junk, mediocrity, masquerading as talent and hyped up
media releases screeching the next big thing, you sometimes wonder where
you can find a little bit of reality when it comes to good, solid music.
In 1999, Ted Simpson and Mark Kirk, mutually fed up to the gills with
slick, over produced pop disguised as country by the inclusion of fiddles
and steel guitar, joined forces to record an album of laid back Aussie
country songs, with a few classics redone with a country flavour.
The self titled album was launched at the Tamworth Country Music Festival
in 2000, and despite having no industry backing whatsoever, to date
it's sold over one thousand copies; by word of mouth and direct at gigs...
Not a bad effort if you consider a commercial release is "up there"
if it sells 3000.
You might also ask Rachel Ward (you know her... spunky babe with Bryan
Brown as a husband) she liked "Girl With a Country Heart"
enough to play it twice in her movie "Martha's New Coat",
2003. Oh, and the community radio people also liked it, chances are
you might hear it anywhere in Oz on a local country programme. Yes,
4AAA Brisbane also loved it; "Long Distance Driver" was on
high rotation for several months (thanks for the APRA cheque guys) and
there were also some nominations in 2001 for "Lady in the Park">
Recorded by Herm Kovak at Ramrod Studios in Sydney, the album is a showcase
for Ted's unique voice; classically trained, with a range as big as
the great divide. Once you've heard Ted, you won't forget him. He'll
even tell you that he was a founding member of 70's glam rock group
HUSH, but don't hold that against him. The ARMY did him a favour by
requesting his company for the call up to Nasho.
Mark Kirk, on the other hand, succesfully avoided National Service by
cleverly being born on the right day. Since then, mark has combined
a love of Resch's draught with an ability to hold a guitar and not fall
off stage, unless pushed. He's also found time to write some songs,
and you can listen to these on the album.
